Coleman was born in Blackpool Lancashire. Coleman attended Arnold School in Blackpool where she was head girl and received straight As on her A-levels. In response to questions about her role in Emmerdale she stated that she regrets not to have had an experience like the traditional one at university. Coleman, while still in the high school system, was a student of a theatrical company called In Yer Space. They presented the show Crystal Clear for the Edinburgh Festival. Steven Moffat of Doctor Who made it clear at a press conference held on the 21st of March, 2012, that Coleman was to be replacing Karen Gillan after she and Arthur Darvill had left. Moffat stated that he picked Coleman to be the companion because she could work best with Smith. Additionally, Moffat noted that she spoke faster than Smith.
